CBD and CBG Protected Brain Cells From Toxic Damage. Here's What That Study Actually Says.

You've probably seen the headline floating around: CBD and CBG protect brain cells. It's a real study, and it's interesting. It's also easy to oversell. So here's the straight version, the way we'd want it explained to us.

What the researchers did

Scientists from Uruguay, Chile and Spain published the study in ChemMedChem in October 2026. They grew rat brain cells in a lab dish, then exposed them to rotenone, a chemical that attacks the mitochondria. Mitochondria are the power plants inside every cell. When they fail, the cell runs out of energy and dies.

Then they added CBD or CBG to see what happened.

What they found

Both CBD and CBG protected the neurons from the damage. Their raw acid forms, CBDA and CBGA, did not.

That part wasn't new. The same team had shown it before. The open question was how. CBD and CBG weren't working through the usual cannabinoid receptors (CB1, CB2) or the other common targets researchers had checked.

So the team looked at a different one: the sigma-1 receptor. Think of it as a maintenance crew stationed right where mitochondria connect to the rest of the cell. It helps manage calcium levels, oxidative stress and how well mitochondria do their job.

When researchers blocked sigma-1 with a drug called NE-100, the protective effect of CBD and CBG disappeared. No sigma-1, no protection. Computer models of the human version of the receptor also showed CBD and CBG fitting into it and staying put.

Bottom line: the study points to sigma-1 as a key pathway behind CBD and CBG's protective effect on neurons in this model.

What this study does not say

We'd rather you hear this from us than find out later.

  • It was done on rat cells in a dish, not people.
  • It doesn't tell us what dose would matter in a human, or whether a tincture gets there.
  • It doesn't show CBD or CBG prevents or treats any disease.

Lab studies like this are the first step, not the finish line. They tell scientists where to look next.

Why it's still worth paying attention to

For years, most of the conversation was about CBD alone. CBG has been the quiet one. This study puts both side by side and finds they behave similarly, through a pathway tied to how cells handle stress and energy.

It's one more data point in a growing body of research. That's how good science works: slowly, one study at a time, with people checking each other's work.

Where we stand

We put CBD and CBG together in our daytime tincture, In Service, because we believe in what both bring to the table. We're not going to tell you this study proves anything about our product. It doesn't. What we will do is keep reading the research and keep giving it to you straight.
